Starr pulls off yet another fabulous performance as Lady Andatramp. Admittedly, his character has the best lines in the show, but Starr goes even further than the material with his talented delivery. He also does and impressive job with the difficult torch song, "Love on the Rocks (Hurts like the Dickens)." His portrayal of Andatramp is reminiscent of Bette Davis's Margo Channing in All About Eve-- a tough, jaded bitch with a lot of spunk and a warm heart. In addition, he shows off his usual dancing prowess, despite the unusual impediments of a tight corset and long petticoats...

...Sleep and The Long Goodbye: a missing girl (Rachel York) who turns up, clad only in a sheet and beckoning for comfort, on the detective's flophouse bed; the sultry wife of a rich, infirm old man, who fibs as automatically as other people breathe; the detective's torch-singer ex-girlfriend, now reduced to offering more private entertainments; and a spooky guru bilking the faithful. Librettist Larry Gelbart cheerily exploits these cliches without sneering at the genre. In telling the Hollywood side of the story, however, he is at times as snide as in his just closed satire...

...voice is phenomenal, her stage presence at once imposing and inviting. Pfeiffer gives to Suzie Diamond such a joyous, sultry energy that all who listen feel the spirit of the music surround and lift them. They actually believe and wish all those old torch songs to be true. Suzie's version of "Machine' Whoopee" on top of Jack's piano is straight out of Hollywood history and perfectly executed...
