...sight to behold. Director and writer Guillermo Del Toro takes Mike Mignola’s cult-fave comic to new depths, adding meat to the hero and villains, expanding the back-story, and throwing in a crucial monster-human love story that the books lacked. But Del Toro??€™s adoration for the off-kilter miasma of Mignola’s world and the monster-fighting monster is also evident in his attention to the bizarre detail and playful spirit of the comic...

Everything from the gothic scenery to the story’s vaudevillian tone seeps through Guillermo Navarro’s vibrant photography and Del Toro??€™s script, as full of thrills as it is of an anti-formulaic, self-aware logic. Ron Perlman, of TV’s Beauty and the Beast fame, has the chops (and the eyebrows and the jawbones) to deliver Hellboy’s throwaway one-liners and punches with the appropriate devil-may-care élan: he’s Dirty Harry with a penchant for beer and pancakes, a superhero-everyman...

The trigger-happy viewer will quickly dissolve into Hellboy nerd-dom, muttering...

...three leading actors’ performances are beyond praise. Del Toro??€™s quietly charged portrayal of Jack paints a compassionate man whose very love for Jesus blinds him into eschewing familial relations for one that exists in the abstract, while Penn can be charming, sad and pitiful all in the same shot. Most impressive, however, is Watts as a bereaved mother, unrelentingly peeling back layer upon layer of unmentionable grief. Many of Watts’s best moments would’ve neared over-the-top drama in the hands of many other actresses, yet the camera?...

...recommended him as the man to do the rewrite for director Sam Bayer, but this project is one in a long line of collaborations between Del Toro and Silva. The two attended school together in San Juan and could often be found shooting hoops or watching movies at Del Toro??€™s house. Silva recalls that Del Toro had an extensive film collection. When Del Toro moved to Pennsylvania in high school they stayed in touch regularly. Since 1992, they have joined forces on several scripts, none of which have been produced...
