Died. Mark Van Doren, 78, educator, author and poet; in Torrington, Conn. A lean, soft-spoken scholar, Van Doren launched his career as an educator at New York City's Columbia University in 1920. Though he wrote more than 50 books of verse, fiction and literary criticism and in 1940 won a Pulitzer Prize for his spare, Frostian lyrics (Collected Poems), the classroom remained his focal point for 39 years. Eliot, who served as a reserve Army intelligence officer between 1922 and 1930, turned from writing war stories for pulp magazines to serious military commentary in 1928, subsequently publishing 15 books on military and international affairs.
