...arched tower with a vertical slot down its center that lightens the building's mass and brings the sky itself into play. The Spanish designer Santiago Calatrava is by training both an architect and an engineer, and his new high-rise projects wear their engineering on their sleeves. Turning Torso, an apartment and office tower under construction in Malmö, Sweden, spirals suavely around its central core like a plug of twisted toffee, producing a form that looks stable and unified but also pliant, voluptuous. And for a condo tower about to go up in lower Manhattan, Calatrava breaks...
...bundle of metal and cables, thinly veiled by a translucent armor. But what makes DB special is its ability to learn new skills by mimesis, or mimicry. To understand how the human brain integrates sensory information and motor control, Kawato gave DB a dexterous body with functioning eyes, neck, torso, arms and legs. DB can watch a dance demonstration, memorize the movement pattern and replicate it by moving its body. So far, the robot has acquired about 30 skills, including juggling, air hockey, yo-yoing, folk dancing and playing the drum. Kawato is calling for a 30-year national project...
...proposals have come in. They include ones for a 25-ft. stick-figure robot from the University of Maryland and a pair of pivoting arms by the Canadian group that developed the shuttles' manipulator arm. The most personable is NASA's Robonaut, which has a torso, arms and a head that are adult size and a leg that plugs in for stability and power. The Robonaut was built as a spacewalk assistant to hand astronauts tools and perform the butler-like task of brushing contaminants off their space suits. But with five-fingered hands and cameras for eyes...
...eyeful of just how perverse those particular soldiers had been. One of the videos seems to show a G.I. preparing to sodomize a male detainee. A still shot portrays an anguished female prisoner lifting her shirt to expose her breasts. Another photo zeroes in on the face and torso of a detainee smeared with what appear to be feces. In a picture of a body bag unzipped to reveal the ice-packed corpse of a man with a badly bruised face, a female soldier flashes a wide grin and a thumbs-up. And a host of pictures show...
...shot in a single take one afternoon in January as the soccer star enjoyed a post-training siesta in his Madrid hotel room. The monitor is positioned so that he is lying at eye level, and since the room is dark, we see only his head and his naked torso, light blue sheets covering his waist. It is amazingly intimate, as if, yes, you yourself are curled up in bed with Beckham. I think I can speak for all 12 of us in the room when I say that this is a mighty fine place to be. Taylor-Wood...
