Busy Signal. Meanwhile, other insiders were flooding London's legal bookmakers with bets on the winning dogs. The bookies, who pay track odds, frantically tried to lay off some of the money at Dagenham itself. But the telephone circuits serving the tote at the track were blocked and busy for a crucial ten minutes before race time...

...radio made election nights social occasions. Armed with pencils and ruled-off pads, the group around the set had plenty of time for argument and suspense, listening to the votes pile up. Television took the pencil-and-paper fun out of things by substituting the tote board, accompanied by the Friendly Pundit to explain what the flicking numbers seemed to mean. Now the computer is in danger of spoiling the party altogether by announcing the winners before anyone has time to open a can of beer...

For the evening, slippers are carried in jeweled reticules...

History-minded visitors to the Philippines often feel they have traveled by Time Machine back to an earlier America. So many Filipinos tote pistols that nightclubs, restaurants, government buildings and even the Philippine Air Lines insist in true Western style that customers check their firearms at the entrance. Prosperous Filipino business men, like the U.S. robber barons of the 1890s, build ornate homes in Manila's luxurious suburb of Forbes Park, where special police with carbines guard the streets against tough intruders from the slums. Bandits roam the back country, and pirates aboard motor launches raid docks and fishing...
