First of the four expected guests to arrive is Christopher Wren, an eccentric young man who loves cooking and other men. Donal Logue plays this character with flair, but also with a touch of caricature. Entering from stage left is Mrs. Boyle (Jennifer Hodges), who wears far too much makeup on her face and powder in her hair. Kleiler still programs the Rear Window himself, maintaining his commitment to local film, but also branching out to include obscure and cult features ranging from Russ Meyer films to little seen works of major directors like Sam Peckinpah. Only about half the mostly black student body of 2,800 showed up for classes on any given day. The school's administrators had lost control. No wonder a monitoring commission set up by a federal court described Redford as the worst high school in Detroit...
