DIED. LEON AMES, 90, actor; in Corona del Mar, California. On big screen and small, Ames' warm voice and reassuring manner made him a favorite for roles requiring a paternal touch, from Judy Garland's indulgent turn-of-the century dad in Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) to Kathleen Turner's mystical grandfather in Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), Ames' last screen role. In all, he appeared in more than 100 films. His television work also had a fatherly bent, as in the short-lived series Life with Father and Father of the Bride. His best- known TV role...
...launching of a barge usually brings a splash of cheer. But as the Jeffboat shipyard in Jeffersonville, Ind., dispatched barge No. 6402 last week, a touch of sadness hung by the Ohio River across from Louisville. The occasion marked the waning of the era of riverboat building, if not its end. Jeffboat, Inc., once launched up to 15 barges a week. This barge, a grain vessel, was the last. The inland waterway fleet is overbuilt and underused, and Jeffboat, its work force reduced to 70 from a 1981 peak of 2,300, will retreat into the repair business. Jeffboat folds...

...major misstep for a company that markets its products as simpler, more elegant and easier to use than the competition's. "The store is basically broken at this point," said Michael Rose, a blogger for tuaw.com, which reports on Apple. When he tried to upgrade his older iPhone Touch early Friday to take advantage of the new software, he says he received an error message informing him the iTunes store was unavailable (the iPhone must be authenticated through Apple's iTunes program to complete a software upgrade). Adds Rose, "I think the lesson is that nobody executes perfectly, not even...
...half I spent in South Africa working with Nelson Mandela on his autobiography--seeing him most every day--were extraordinarily thrilling and rewarding. (And add to that the fact that I met my wife there too.) When the project was over, I missed him terribly and stayed in touch as much as I could. With his 90th birthday approaching, I wanted to make sure that my two boys--each of whom boasts a Mandela-related middle name--saw the great man one more time. He was sunny and happy that morning, and spent most of the time entertaining my sons...
