Back in Lima last month after a Colombian tour, 24-year-old Conchita, a slim, trim blonde with unforgettably cold blue eyes, was the talk and toast of the Peruvian capital. U.S. Ambassador Prentice Cooper stopped her on the street, introduced himself, gladly shook her tiny, calloused hand. Twice she fought in the ring-and brilliantly. She might have appeared oftener (at her usual $12,000 fee), but she was annoyed that Lima's new 30,000-seat bull ring, for which she laid the first stone three years ago, was still unfinished...

Winner last month of his twelfth French indoor title, Borotra at 48 is still one of the four or five top indoor players in Europe. Last week in Manhattan-third stop in his current U.S. exhibition tour*-his free-swinging volleys and unorthodox backhand (which looks much like a ping-pong shot) were not in top form, but his ebullient disposition was (chasing a drive, he landed in a spectator's lap, apologized with a winning Gallic bow). Frank Shields's big service was too big for Borotra, just as it had been in the Wimbledon semi-finals...

Last week 80 of them, on tour of the Pacific Coast, were on exhibition in Portland, Ore.'s art museum. Next stop: Seattle...

Apologies & Diamonds. Princess Elizabeth's 21st birthday party in Cape Town will be the last grand ceremonial of the African tour. There will be more salutes, more reviews, more fireworks, and another grand ball. There will be state presents for everyone: a gold box full of diamonds (to put on his Garter star) for the King; an engraved gold tea service for the Queen, 17 graduated diamonds for Margaret-and for Elizabeth herself, 21 graduated brilliant-cut diamonds interspersed with baguettes to string on a necklace. For Elizabeth that day will mean also a rise in income from...

...crowned 1947 Radio Sweater Girl by the National Knitted Outerwear Foundation, which picked Nina Foch as Hollywood Queen. The New York Yankees crowned Operatic Soprano Helen Traubel Miss Symphonic Matinee of 1947 and gave her an autographed baseball. Veteran Muralist Dean Cornwell reported after a coast-to-coast tour that in good looks "suburban girls lead city girls," and have "better developed breasts, more streamlined figures ... a lasting, healthy bloom to their skin. . . ." Sweden's 88-year-old King Gustaf moved down to the French Riviera for the sun & fun. Arid in Britain's House of Lords, Christopher...
