Fleshpots & Long Shots. The contribution of Tijuana (pop. 140,000) to the new prosperity is, as always, tourist dollars. Last year just under 10 million U.S. citizens passed through the arched gates at the border, dropped an estimated $70 million at the Hipódromo de Tijuana race track and in curio shops, restaurants, hotels and brothels. Tijuana also boasts flourishing new residential sections of costly ($20,000 to $25,000) houses...
From Cuba, Gossipist Leonard Lyons reported upon a merry encounter with old friends: "The Havana tourist season hasn't started yet. 'That's why this is a good time for working,' Ernest Hemingway had told us earlier, at lunch at his home. On the wall was the mounted skin of the lion Mary Hemingway had shot in Africa. No bullet hole was evident. 'I'm almost embarrassed,' she smiled. 'I shot him while he was running away...
...spectacular as it is, the tourist boom is just a part-the smaller part-of the statewide business buildup. This year Florida manufacturing will outshine Florida tourism as the No. 1 dollar earner by an estimated $1.5 billion to $1.3 billion. Between the two, Florida's investment in new construction will top $1 billion, the sixth straight yearly record. In the past two years, more than 1,000 manufacturers have built new plants or made major expansions, boosting Florida's manufacturing payroll by 8% v. the national gain...
Fringe Benefits. Manufacturing is growing fastest in the Gold Coast tourist spas, where any company can attract employee talent with the free fringe benefits of sun and surf. Dade County (Miami) leads the state with 96 new plants in the first half of 1957; Broward County (Fort Lauderdale) is second with 51 plants. Pinellas County (St. Petersburg) is being transformed from a senior citizens' haven to a humming technical center. Since 1956, General Electric's X-Ray division has established a $7,000,000 plant, and Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Co. has opened a $4,500,000 missile-parts...
THRIFT CLASS AIR SERVICE will be airlines' answer to CAB's request for cut in North Atlantic fares. New service would trim U.S.-to-Europe fares by 20%, but offer only sandwich-and-coffee meals, have 34 inches between seats v. 43 inches on tourist flights. Airlines at same time would boost tourist and first-class fares by about 9%, set London-New York rates of thrift class at $252; tourist $315 (up from $290), first class $435 (up from $400). But CAB frowns on "austerity service" and higher rates, may veto plan...
