...also small comfort to the U.S. that other Western nations have been guilty of wartime atrocities. The French executed some 15,000 Moslems in the long Algerian war of the 1950s. At Amritsar in India's Punjab, British Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer marched 50 of his soldiers toward a menacing mob of Indians in 1919 and, without warning, they killed 379 people with rifle fire. The Germans bombed and machine-gunned to death 1,600 people of the tiny town of Guernica, Spain, in 1937, rounded up and shot 200,000 Jews at Babi Yar in 1941. And there...
According to Christian moral theology, the self-awareness of sin and guilt is a necessary prologue to sanctity; in the prism of psychoanalysis, self-discovery is seen as the first step toward sanity. Individuals are not identical with nations, but sometimes they are analogous. And thus it can be argued that only the nation that has faced up to its own failings and acknowledged its capacities for evil and ill-doing has any real claim to greatness...
Clinging Dust. In one movie sequence, shot through Intrepid's window as the craft settled toward a landing, dust kicked up by the descent engine begins to obscure the lunar landscape. It finally blots out the landing site completely, vividly demonstrating why Conrad had to make an instrument landing. Another strip, shot on the trip home, shows a dazzling eclipse of the sun caused by the earth itself...

By the time the monsoon rains began last spring, the Chinese had pushed a gravel-topped all-weather road 55 miles south as far as Muong Sai, a town on an important Mekong River tributary, then northeast toward North Viet Nam. Last September, as the rains ended, the coolies moved on-this time southwestward through the Beng Valley toward the Mekong River and the border of Thailand...
Nine out of ten complaints about noise in the U.S. cannot be handled by existing legislation, Baron claims. Few states and cities have restrictions on noise, and the Federal Government only last July took its first small step toward quiet. As a condition of getting or keeping federal contracts, companies must follow new Department of Labor rules controlling excessive noise in factories. So far, Baron's lobbying in New York helped persuade Mayor John Lindsay to appoint a special task force on noise control. Its recommendations include such specific-and belated-moves as a crackdown on rumbling trucks...
