...Despite the news, the Nikkei index slipped only slightly Wednesday because the Japanese Diet looked to be making some progress -- albeit slow and circuitous -- toward a critical compromise on banking reform. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party favors maintaining a fairly generous state-sponsored bank rescue plan, while opposition parties (and the West) want to let weak banks and the enterprises they support perish. Somewhere in the middle may be a viable bill, and the latest round of failures may be enough to spur even the often listless LDP to get economic reform out of the hemming-and-hawing phase...
KINSHASA, Congo: The western front is closed in the Congo's civil war. President Laurent Kabila declared Monday that government troops, backed by the Angolans, have turned the rebels away from the capital of Kinshasa and have vowed to follow them east toward Rwanda and Uganda until the fight is finished. Of course, it's a matter of how well they pick stocks. That's why 80 years of success managing pensions is so comforting...
...Currie and Lewinsky allegedly disagree on whether the intern asked the secretary to pick up Clinton's gifts in person at her Watergate apartment. But if Clinton and Lewinsky both said discussions over returning the gifts occurred prior to the Paula Jones case, the discrepancy can hardly count toward an obstruction of justice charge. Tripp's troubles -- a Radio Shack store now says it warned her that wiretapping was illegal -- may help to discredit one of Ken Starr's central witnesses. Lindsey, of course, is hardly likely to be loose-lipped. And yet their combined presence may serve to bring...
