...call. Avzi Bejadini, an ethnic Albanian peasant in western Macedonia, tells how he and others in his village have scraped together money that they pass along to the fund raisers who parade through the countryside. "We all have emptied our pockets because of the obligation we feel toward our ethnic Albanian brothers in Kosovo," he says. Indeed, just last month the farmer sank his entire life savings--$8--into an account to help collect food and supplies for Kosovo's refugees. In return, Bejadini was given a pistachio-colored receipt with no inscription of the collector's name...

...much Albright's outlook and style are rooted in her personal history. Her father, the wartime Czechoslovak diplomat Josef Korbel, was witty and gregarious, with a knack for survival. Madeleine, who as a child spent two lonely years in Belgrade when he was ambassador there, developed an instinctive antipathy toward thugs. As TIME's Ann Blackman explains in her Albright biography, Seasons of Her Life (Scribner), she mirrors him: she has a deep reservoir of intelligence and wit, but sometimes seems to wear blinders to protect her from things that clash with her self-image. Indeed, it might even be violating a 1984 federal law that declares organs a national resource not subject to compensation. Already there are voices opposing the very idea of pricing a kidney...

These pieces are, for the most part, Wyoming grotesques. The people are hard, and the view bleak, tending toward melancholy. Brokeback Mountain is a surprise, the matter-of-fact, sorrowing, sketched life of a cowboy and his friend, married men, ordinary sorts, who over the decades never fully realize that they are gay. Real guys aren't gay, because, sex aside, they don't know how to be gay. A story called The Half-Skinned Steer is as grim as its title, and it begins, "In the long unfurling of his life, from tight-wound kid hustler in a wool...
