...wonderful to be a filmmaker in Paris! Every morning you step out the door into the greatest standing set in the world. It's not just the places all of us tourists know - the Tuileries, the Eiffel Tower, the Latin Quarter - it's the anonymous streets where the food in the humblest bistro makes your mouth water, the women are always pert and smartly dressed, the men rueful and wise. Everything and everyone merely awaits further transformation by the cinematographer's glamorizing light. Even a sad story does not seem quite so doleful in this context...

They publicly defended Summers after he suggested, at an economics conference nearly 28 months ago, that “intrinsic aptitude” could partially account for the dearth of female scientists at elite universities. In a mid-19th century swell of patriotism, public donations helped construct a monument in honor of William Wallace, Scotland's fiercest defender. Responsibility for coordinating this Tower of Babel still lies with the coalition forces. But in the coming year, more territory within the Green Zone, as in the rest of Iraq, is slated to be turned over to Iraqi government control. Manikas is part of the crew logging 12-hour days to build the new $592 million U.S. embassy, a small city of low-slung, thick concrete buildings with small windows on the banks of the Tigris. When it's finished this fall, the new compound will be the largest embassy ever built. Nearly all U.S. personnel will move...

William Kelso disagreed. Unlike his colleagues, Kelso, a specialist in colonial American archaeology who began working for the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities in 1993, was convinced that the fort lay instead somewhere close to the brick church tower built in 1690, the only surviving structure from the colony's first century. So on April 4, 1994, he put his shovel in the ground, and less than an hour later turned up fragments of early 17th century ceramics. Over the next few months, Kelso and a team of volunteers uncovered a series of circular stains in the soil...
