...days ago, Noam Chomsky spoke to one of my classes. For those who don’t know him, Noam Chomsky is to foreign policy what Howard Zinn is to U.S. history: an anti-establishment academic who enjoys widespread popularity outside of the Ivory Tower. Chomsky makes some valid criticisms of American policy, but his speech illustrated what is wrong with a certain strand of campus radicalism. In his speech, Chomsky claimed the majority of Americans are to the left of both political parties, the media, and academia. Their preferences are not reflected in public policy decisions because America...

...unassuming Kolmeshöhe cemetery, German and American flags flutter from the tower that overlooks the quaint, newly restored town of Bitburg. The two flags symbolize the friendship that Bitburg's German residents and the 10,600 Americans connected with the U.S. air base there have come to associate with their haven in the Eifel hills near the Luxembourg border. Each year since the cemetery was consecrated in 1959, American and French military officials have joined Germans in a wreath-laying ceremony at Kolmeshöhe. News inter viewers pose tough questions for high Administration officials; ex-game show hosts lob softballs at starlets plugging their latest movies; snarling radio talk-meisters shout angry opinions on everything from Ronald Reagan to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Amid this flood of verbiage, King provides a refreshing strain of intelligent, graceful conversation. For 71/2 years, that conversation has been largely confined to the middle of the night, on the Mutual Radio Network's Larry King Show. Now King has ventured into prime-time TV as host of a nightly talk show...

...structure is what is now called the Atomic Bomb Dome, originally Hiroshima Prefecture's Industrial Promotion Hall, a sort of chamber of commerce building and exhibition hall in 1945. The remains stand just outside the point of the park, across the Aioi Bridge. This shell is Hiroshima's Eiffel Tower, its Statue of Liberty. Where the dome rose, only the supporting beams remain, a giant hairnet capping four floors of vacant gray walls, much of their outer skin peeled away, exposing patches of brick. The interior floors are also gone, making the entire structure an accidental atrium. A front doorway...
