Back in 2004, Gwen Stefani made her debut as a solo artist with a posse of Japanese females in tow. Christened the Harajuku Girls, they introduced the American public to a particular brand of the Japanese fashion scene, though its representation was severely skewed. The style originated in Tokyo’s eponymous district and draws upon countless chronological and geographical influences, both aesthetically and commercially—European luxury brands regularly vie for the attention of Harajuku consumers alongside local designers. The potential origins of this uniquely Japanese amalgamation of cultural pressures are currently on display at the Museum...
...term boomerang children used to refer to young adults moving back in with their parents, but the recession is forcing people in their 30s and 40s and older - often with a spouse and kids in tow - to bunk in with the 'rents until they regain their financial footing. All this culminates under the lull of John Lurie’s syncopated voice. This is the premise of “Keep It For Yourself,” a stunning film by French director Claire Denis. Originally made...

Director Marc Forster--whose rsum includes a lot of gimmicky art-house fare, from Finding Neverland to The Kite Runner--does much better when he has no moral in tow; he can concentrate on shepherding the second-unit stunt work and setting a tempo of nearly nonstop suspense. What's lost in reverberations from the series' blithe old movies is gained in daredevil vigor...
