Wayne Krouse has a seductive idea: dam-free hydropower. In a year, his start-up, Hydro Green Energy of Houston, plans to have a pair of turbines pumping electricity from under the Mississippi River at Hastings, Minn.--a town willing to give a new idea a try. "Everybody likes a science experiment, and this is just a big science experiment," says Tom Montgomery, Hastings' public-works director. The barge-mounted turbines will be unconventional, but Krouse's design yields twice the energy of earlier versions--and doesn't require new dams, which take years to license...
...Finding insight in fields as disparate as psychology, politics, screenwriting, economics, folklore and epidemiology, they deconstruct sticky ideas--from Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign classic "It's the economy, stupid" to the way Jane Elliott taught the civil rights movement to third-graders in an all-white Iowa town (see next page). After issuing a profit warning in August, though, Ricke presented the supervisory board with a plan to cut 67,000 jobs, boost revenues and make Telekom the most profitable European carrier by 2010. Clearly, he is getting the message...
...DIED. Leonid Hambro, 86, brilliant concert pianist with a superhuman memory; in New York City. He dazzled with a 1952 performance at New York City's Town Hall, for which he had to learn complex works in less than a day. But the Julliard alum found broadest appeal as the straight man to funnyman-pianist Victor Borge, with whom he performed for 10 years, starting...
