What the World Needs Now I appreciated Michael Kinsley's essay on the desirable leadership quality that is toxic to mention because of its allegedly élitist overtones: intelligence [Oct. 27]. I have long felt that U.S. presidential candidates, much like graduate students, should be subject to a preliminary examination in their area of expertise. Candidates should have some knowledge of, if not proficiency in, world history, religions, cultures, geography. As it is now, we assume the media and debates will ferret out deficiencies in candidates' education that might lead to serious, perhaps deadly decisions - and that is not always...
...shots of Britney in a sauna, completely naked—and oh so shiny. “Womanizer” is an interesting video, however, and not because it has a confusing plot that director Joseph Kahn admits to be a redo of the vid for “Toxic.” It’s interesting because it suggests that if you really want to hurt a guy’s feelings, all you have to do is dance at him, really, really hard. So maybe dancing can be revenge. But revenge itself is a timeworn plot...
...every dollar of wealth you had. It meant borrowing other people's money to invest in something you wanted to invest in, or to buy something you wanted to buy. On Wall Street, debt funded investments in pretty much everything a financial firm could bet on, including the toxic mortgage-backed securities that led the way into this crisis. On Main Street, it meant borrowing to buy a house or a condo - maybe two - then perhaps borrowing again off the increasing value of that property to pay for something else: a flat-screen TV, a new set of golf clubs...
That attitude hardly emerged overnight. For the past few years, Greenpeace has been ranking and publishing electronics companies' greenness based on how toxic their products are, the efficacy of their recycling policies and their impact on the climate. (The Finnish cell-phone company Nokia holds the top spot, while Nintendo and Microsoft lag at the bottom.) The public scolding has helped prompt electronics makers to start changing product design and production - and encourage a private shift among electronics-industry workers, who, like many Americans, are gradually focusing attention on the environmental value of their work. Their bosses have noticed...
...ground in Bala Beluk, the trainers see a more pressing reason to have embedded mentors: preventing the newly trained police from backsliding into old practices, and protecting them from corrupt officials who are threatened by clean cops. They compare Bala Beluk to 1970s New York City, with its toxic mix of gang warfare, corruption, organized crime and drug commerce. Khodaydad, they say, is an Afghan Frank Serpico, the cop who exposed systematic and widespread corruption within the city's police ranks, and was shot by heroin dealers in what was thought to have been a hit organized by corrupt colleagues...
