...expect from a master fabulist. Could real life have been nearly so much fun? "It was creative and chaotic at our house," says Steven's father Arnold, 68, a computer executive with twelve patents to his name. "I'd help Steven construct sets for his 8-mm movies, with toy trucks and papier mache mountains. At night I'd tell the kids cliffhanger tales about characters like Joanie Frothy Flakes and Lenny Ludhead. I see pieces of me in Steven. I see the storyteller...
...market and consciousness. A wistful tramp wreaks havoc in a Manhattan pawnshop, and Asians fall in love with Charlie Chaplin. Judy Garland sings about a rainbow, and Europeans know it is only a dream away from Kansas. It is a lovely image, unlikely and tender. It also typifies his knack for keeping sentimentality at bay in even the most tempting circumstances. His pictures are sweet-tempered but never pat, heartfelt but not tearstained, legible but rarely obvious...
Coleco disputes the trade magazine's findings, which were based on a telephone survey of 50 toy sellers. It claims still to be No. 1. But even if sales momentum has slowed, Coleco hopes to build an ever growing patch of ancillary products. Toy stores currently stock Coleco's Cabbage Patch doll pets ('Koosas) and infant dolls (Preemies). Coming soon: a doll-size fun fur, a pet pony and dolls dressed in foreign garb...
