Over the same period, registration of new convertibles is up 63%, according to R.L. Polk & Co. The new fleet ranges from family-oriented cruisers like the Toyota Camry Solara to such trophy hot rods as the Lexus SC 430. At next week's New York International Auto Show, carmakers from Audi to Mercedes will show off new models. Even Chevy's pickup division is joining the fray, with a "sport roadster" set to roll into showrooms...

DoCoMo's profits leaped tenfold in four years; for the last fiscal year, ended March 2001, it posted record earnings of $3 billion. When its share price peaked last spring, DoCoMo was the 11th-largest company in the world, with enough spare cash to buy a 16% chunk of AT&T Wireless, the third-largest mobile phone company...

The really emotive mobiles - the '49, the GT40, the new Cadillacs - are priced beyond our reach. Toyota is trying. But with all the production technology out there, can't anyone start making a people's car that doesn't make us commoners have to get our thrills from looking at the pictures...
