VERDI: LA FORZA DEL DESTINO (RCA Victor; 4 LPs). Schippers again, but without the imagination he gives to Macbeth. He just keeps things going along and lets his experienced performers (Leontyne Price, Richard Tucker, Giorgio Tozzi) take over. Price is at her very best. Her voice magnifies Verdi's intent and makes every hoary old aria sound as if it were written yesterday. Tucker at 50 gives every indication that he can go on singing forever-a cheering prospect. A sheepskin over one shoulder and a shell in one hand identify the youth as St. John the Baptist, and while Tozzi patiently cleaned the fragile ancient marble inch by inch, using only castile soap and a toothbrush, he began to think it might be a lost statue that Michelangelo is known to have carved in 1496. The possibility has aroused the cautious enthusiasm of a number...

...season's first week gave Adler more reason than ever to believe the testimonials to his genius that gleam down on him from the walls of his office. Price, Regina Resnik and Giorgio Tozzi gave him an excellent opening night and Sutherland's Sonnambula won love-letter reviews. There was a sparkling new production of The Barber of Seville, and a Mefistofele in which dancers and chorus kindled each other to spectacular performances on sets that sometimes looked like paintings by Tintoretto. San Francisco was seeing some of the best-produced opera the American season can expect...
