...like Washington's own Great Communicator. Gorbachev's greeting to his visitors, noted Conte, was almost fulsome. He had been well briefed by aides, and spoke through an interpreter from color-coded typed notes. He made his points firmly, often with emotion and at times with humor and a trace of sardonic wit; Conte recorded that he even hit the table with his fist for emphasis. One of the charmed visitors called him quite an actor. The meeting ran on for almost four hours, even though it was only scheduled...

...roommates’ and my attempt to capitalize on the Harvard mystique is hardly original. You could probably trace the phenomenon back to boys’ books of the ’teens and ’twenties, such as Fuller at Harvard, but it certainly reached its flowering in Erich Segal’s shamelessly treacly Love Story. The fact that such a conventional story of improbable cross-class love achieved widespread popularity is attributable in large part to its setting...

Even if we can’t trace precisely when shades of the Animal House ethos emerged at Harvard, we can assume it existed early enough to inspire parts of the film. Co-writer Doug Kenny ’69 is a Harvard alumnus, and if his Spee Club presidency doesn’t scream raucous, perhaps his trademark goof does: legend has it he could put his entire fist in his mouth. Visitors to the Whitechapel show, which runs until May 22, can trace the genesis of Fritz the Cat in pencil frames, interspersed with doodles of the large women Crumb adores. Fritz bounces down lovingly detailed streets, speaking in long, melodramatic balloons: "My Gabrielle! That you should deem me worthy of you fills me with an indescribable joy!" Crumb is not above making...

When MTV launched a station in Africa last month, it was something of a homecoming. At least that's the way Bill Roedy, president of MTV Networks International, likes to think of it. Most music, Roedy points out, can trace its roots to Africa, so it's only right that one of music's biggest global brands is finally tapping the motherland. MTV Base, as the African channel is known, is the company's 43rd regional station and, says Roedy, a potential launchpad for African musicians to go global. Not all local artists feel the station's early playlist matches...
