...tempting to trace this never-look-back attitude to Nair's childhood. She was born into a middle-class civil servant's family in Bhubaneswar, a dirt-poor city in eastern India that is usually given a wide berth by tourists. "Even in Indian terms, it's really remote," she says. Nair was also, she claims, an unwanted child?or, as she puts it, a "contraceptual blunder." In 1957 the Indian government was worried about its exploding population, and her father, a senior bureaucrat, had sworn to limit the family to the two sons they already had. He sent...

...than doubled its total golden haul from Sydney and had claimed the No. 3 spot in the overall gold-medal tally, trailing only the U.S. and China. In the marquee swimming races, Japan's men won four medals?four more than in Sydney, where their squad sank without a trace. The country's female swimmers also captured three medals, including a gold in the 200-m backstroke. Equally impressive, in the men's team-gymnastics final, the Japanese, whose spiky 'dos made them look as if they were sponsored by a hair-gel company, flipped past favorites China, Romania...

The Israelis noticed that this often prompted bombers to put off their journey or to make cell-phone calls to their handlers for traffic information, sometimes enabling Shin Bet to trace a bomber's location and capture him. Now, in a strategy code-named the Blade procedure, when Israelis have hard evidence that a bomber is on the way, they will often announce it. Officials say dozens of terrorist attacks have been prevented that...

...Kerry's trust is given only sparingly, his loyalty isn't. Among the legions of advisers and strategists in his 2004 campaign are about a dozen like Marttila and pollster Tom Kiley who can trace their connection to Kerry all the way back to his failed 1972 campaign for Congress. Many of them had felt shut out by the first manager of Kerry's presidential campaign, Jim Jordan, which was in no small measure why Jordan was fired in November. When Senator Edward Kennedy's then chief of staff Cahill came aboard, she moved quickly into the role of gatekeeper...

...A500,000 Inside Australia sculpture project. For the 2003 Perth International Arts Festival, the Englishman digitally scanned each able-bodied citizen of Menzies (about 130 of them at the time), tweaked their dimensions on a computer screen, and cast their skeletal cores in a mix of stainless steel and trace elements found at the lake. What we get is a town reduced to its bare bones - "boobs" and all. (By drastically slenderizing his subjects, Gormley makes these and other intimate appendages protrude like sausages on sticks.) But if outsiders care to linger with these Insiders - and the roadhouse guest book...
