...gunmen inside open fire on the U.S. soldiers. Through his night-vision goggles, Turner spots three men carrying rocket-propelled-grenade launchers racing toward the stalled convoy. Bullets are zinging in from fields. The gunners atop the humvees open up with their .50-cal. machine guns, and red tracer bullets carve across the darkness. "Call me a friggin' detective, but I'd say they knew we were coming!" yells Turner while radioing for a medevac helicopter. The five soldiers inside the flaming humvee, although burned and slashed by flying shrapnel, have survived. But the vehicle is still rolling straight toward...
...true scanning techniques. According to the IMV Medical Information Division of Des Plaines, Ill., doctors perform annually at least 11.5 million echocardiograms, which use sound waves to produce pictures of the internal structures of the heart, and more than 9 million nuclear perfusion scans, which use mildly radioactive tracer molecules to measure how well the cardiac muscle is nourished. Improvements in computer processing power and software have made these tests more reliable and more conclusive than ever before. Stress tests, which help doctors detect ischemia, or lack of blood flow to the cardiac muscle, can be performed using either echocardiograms...
Frederick Barthelme's third book is a textbook example of what has come to be called minimalist fiction. It does not follow that Tracer is better than the best works by Raymond Carver, Ann Beattie, Mary Robison or Frederick's older brother Donald. They are among the most prominent writers who have experimented in various ways with the notion that in storytelling, less is both more and positively too much. But those who are curious about what the minimalists are up or down to can learn a lot by starting right here...
...Half the 700,000 cases of suspected appendicitis in the U.S. each year lack the usual symptoms of fever and pain in the lower right abdomen, and 15% to 40% of all appendectomies prove unnecessary because the appendix turns out to be normal. The new technique uses a radioactive tracer that binds to an infection-fighting white blood cell. Doctors locate the tracer using an imaging device called a gamma camera. In trials, the technique diagnosed nearly 100% of appendicitis cases within an hour. The tool may also be able to pinpoint hard-to-locate infections in other tissues...
Iraqis found something to celebrate last week when the IRAQ NATIONAL SOCCER TEAM beat Saudi Arabia, 3-1, to qualify for its first-ever Olympic berth. Baghdad's beleaguered residents reveled in their victory, firing tracer rounds and other ammo into the air. For a squad once routinely brutalized by Saddam Hussein's son Uday, the game was finally untainted by terror...
