...profit-making Zoopark, owned by the California Zoological Society, had managed to keep itself going. But it had never built a reserve fund from admission charges, sale of animals, concessions and, most important, renting animal actors to films. Among Zoopark's characters: Jackie, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's trademark lion; Nissa and Sweetheart, leopards which stalked through Bringing Up Baby with Katharine Hepburn; Anna May, veteran jungle-film elephant; Lady, the whooping crane which danced with Shirley Temple in Captain January...

Sirs: Tst, tst. Broderick Crawford's shoes in Of Mice and Men (TIME, Dec. 6) have a 4½-in. buildup, not 4 in., as reported. I ought to know-I made them. Incidentally, this was only the second theatrical order I executed and with that buildup you can't expect inconspicuousness. My regular customers, business and professional people (average sales 200 pairs a month), generally need only 1½ to 2 inches...
Since he finished Swing Low, Sweet Chariot a year ago, slight, clear-headed Artist McCrady has been unaffected by the disposition of everyone who has seen it to make it the McCrady trademark. He has continued to do beautifully colored and dramatic canvases of small Southern towns and cotton country, is now at work on a picture called Judgment Day which will contain no less than 500 figures. An obviously gifted draughtsman, McCrady gets his luminous effects by "under-painting," working in transparent color glazes on a warm, umber ground. Tender, fully imagined, though not profound, his Negro paintings appear...
...attracted by the one speaker who was paid to appear, a redhaired, modest young man named Monroe "'Boston'' Strause, the current sensation of the pastry world. Son of a Los Angeles flour miller named Boston Monroe Strause, he uses his middle name as a kind of trademark. First in partnership with his Uncle Mike in the M. & M. Pie Co. of Los Angeles, "Boston" carried on when Mike quit. A friendly restaurateur helped him design cylindrical aluminum carrying racks for his pies, mahogany-trimmed pie trucks. "They were simply beautiful," Pieman Strause remembers, "just like Pullman cars...
