...Char is not a Hmong, but a Lao trader who for years made a comfortable living selling supplies to remote mountain communities around Phonsavanh. "He was very well liked and respected," says a villager in the district. "He always helped people out if he could." In 1993, says Va Char, a Hmong business contact told him about a remote community in the jungle that needed supplies. "I had never been political until I went to the jungle," he says. "I went there carrying salt and shoes, expecting to find a normal mountain village. Instead I was faced with thousands...

...about half as much as major competitors, but only about 30% of his seats are sold at the lowest advertised price. Fares increase as the plane fills up, especially on very popular routes, so passengers need to buy early to get the dirt-cheap fares. Sam Chan, a Singaporean trader, found this out on a June business trip to Malaysia. I told him that the other Michael Steinhardt has a diabetic Maltese named Sami, and that she only likes...

The crystal methamphetamine, or ice, being "cooked" inside was destined, says Fiji Police Commissioner Andrew Hughes, for "the U.S., Australia, New Zealand and Europe." The cops who swooped on the building June 9 - finding 5 kg of the glassy drug and enough chemicals to make a metric ton of it - came from Fiji, Australia and New Zealand. Of the suspects arrested that day, one was Fijian-born, two were Chinese Fijians and four held Hong Kong passports...

Another pillar of Reagan's approach was to get government out of the way of growing businesses. Deregulation had started tentatively under Carter with the airlines, but Reagan applied it broadly, to energy and broadcasting and butressed it with a dismantling of antitrust laws. Reagan was a staunch free-trader and did little to stop the onslaught against sluggish American corporations from aggressive Japanese manufacturers. Reagan's term coincided with the height of Japan's economic boom, and his instinct was that in the long run, it would be better to let most companies fend for themselves...
