Russia's Andrei Vishinsky had fun with the Danube last week. He swam in it, fixed Soviet trade domination over it and turned the Danube conference into a thoroughfare for Soviet propaganda. He was able to steal the show because the Western powers missed a tailor-made chance to unfold point by point Russia's responsibility for the grave economic plight of her satellites...
...Belgrade conference; but they had known for months they would be and during those months could have prepared the kind of "educational" performance the Russians stage when they are in a minority. The Danubian countries, which are being sucked dry by the one-way trade treaties with Russia, might have been told eloquently and in detail that a Red-dominated Danube meant more poverty for them. They could also have been told convincingly that the U.S. wanted a Danube open to all nations which would mean more trade and fewer restrictions for the Danube nations...
Surprisingly, there was no loud howl from radiomen. Everybody seemed to have been expecting it. Died. Francis Butler Loomis, 87, turn-of-the-century U.S. diplomat, in Burlingame, Calif. As Minister to Venezuela, he played a major part in opening up Latin America to U.S. trade; later, as Acting Secretary of State, he negotiated the acquisition of the Panama Canal Zone...
Antitrust Suits. The Department of Justice's Antitrust Division filed suit against the Far East Conference and its members-six big U.S. shipping lines and 19 foreign lines. The charge: conspiring to monopolize trade between Atlantic Coast ports and the Far East by setting higher rates for customers who did not give them all their business. In another suit, it accused Decca Records, Inc. and its British counterpart, Decca Record Co., Ltd , of trying to divide world markets by "conspiracy and cartel agreements" in violation of the antitrust laws...
