ShopperTrak, which measures sales and traffic at more than 50,000 stores, reports that the number of customers in stores last weekend fell 17% from last year - while total sales showed a tiny gain...
...late evening outside the Taj Mahal hotel on Delhi's Mansingh Road, and the row of cars lining up for security checks at the entrance is fast lengthening into a small traffic jam. Coming just as the wedding and party season was starting up, the brutal Mumbai attacks last month (which devastated a more famous Taj Mahal hotel in that city) have led to heightened security measures, which are proving to be an enormous inconvenience for high society. Cars carrying designer-clad, bejeweled guests have to stop to let security guards peek under the hood and into the back compartment...

The Air Transport Association of America predicts there will be 9% fewer passengers flying this year than last - but that's no guarantee you won't get stuck in the middle seat. Airlines have cut capacity, so the downturn in traffic may not get you much more than a shorter line through security...
Safer Roads. What, no private plane? Feel secure in the knowledge that U.S. highways have become safer than ever, according to the Department of Transportation. The number of people killed in traffic accidents fell 10% in 2008, hitting a record low of 31,110, early estimates suggest. That could be due in part to the fact that there was also a record drop in road travel: Americans drove 100 billion fewer miles between November 2007 and October 2008, compared with the same period a year earlier - the largest continuous decline in U.S. history...
...that activity reflects the grim prospects facing the industry next year. IATA expects the world's airlines to lose an additional $2.5 billion in 2009. Passenger traffic, it forecasts, will slide 3%, the first fall since 2001. Next year looks particularly bleak for European carriers. Having hedged more than U.S. rivals against the spiraling fuel costs earlier this year, European airlines - now locked in to fuel contracts - are less able to benefit from the steep slide in the price of oil in recent weeks. American carriers have also reacted quicker than European rivals when it comes to cutting back...
