...prospects for prayer clubs seem unlimited. In fact, the tragic shooting of eight prayer-club members last December in West Paducah, Ky., by 14-year-old Michael Carneal provided the cause with martyrs and produced a hero in prayer-club president Ben Strong, who persuaded Carneal to lay down his gun. Strong recalls that the club's daily meetings used to draw only 35 to 60 students out of Heath High School's 600. "People didn't really look down on us, but I don't know if it was cool to be a Christian," he says...
...Watching the Oscars from jail was a trip, a real trip," the 33-year-old actor recalled last week in his first face-to-face interview since being released on April 1. "But you know, people are people. I wasn't thinking about my own tragic situation. I was going, 'I didn't expect her to win. Isn't that nice?' I was just another shmuck watching it, you know?" These students were arbitrarily thrown into an environment with students far more advanced academically. The result was predictable: failure. Even more tragic is the fact that these bright black students, as social theorist Thomas Sowell puts it, "were perfectly qualified to be successes somewhere else" but were instead "artificially turned into failures by being admitted to high-pressure campuses, where only students with exceptional academic backgrounds can survive...
...capturing the true essence of Stevie Nicks was Jewel. The sex kitten of the folk cum pop music scene is used to conveying vulnerability. But as Jewel sings "You Make Loving Fun" she seems to have grown up a little. She sounds less tawdry than usual. Instead of her tragic laments, "I was meant for you, and you were meant for me," it is refreshing to hear her in a more assertive role, moving away from broken hearts and deluded expectations. In fact, Jewel seems to enjoy it, and at times, sings with an even teasing lilt...
