...that remixes Yoko Ono's music, Walking on Thin Ice, has topped the dance-club play chart [MUSIC, May 26]. I'm ashamed to admit that, like many other Beatles fans, I hated Yoko until the day John Lennon was shot. It was only after his tragic death, upon seeing the film Imagine, that I realized just how deep and genuine their love for each other was. I don't think the world knew how to embrace true soul mates. John's love for Yoko was naked and raw, and we turned away out of ignorance. We were unhappy that...

...then there are the cases of what--at least to Iraqi eyes--are just tragic misunderstandings. In Samarra last week three Iraqi teenagers were killed and 10 injured in what the U.S. describes as a fire fight with American troops. But staff members at the local hospital say the Americans responded to innocent firing from a wedding party. (The U.S. military is investigating.) ORHA had already announced plans to ban celebratory firing, but communications in central Iraq are so poor--there is effectively no functioning TV or radio--that it is doubtful whether anyone in Samarra had heard of them...

...system is clearly broken, and there is no quick fix in sight. To doctors like Sosenko, the main problems are frivolous lawsuits and multimillion-dollar judgments awarded for tragic but sometimes unavoidable outcomes. (A banner at a rally read SICK? CALL A LAWYER) The waiting room at Sosenko's Midwest Pulmonary these days looks almost like a campaign headquarters. Banners declaring WE HAVE A CRISIS! hang alongside lists of politicians' names and phone numbers. Sosenko's patients have signed petitions calling on politicians to make malpractice reform a top priority...

Sept. 11 undermined traditional antiwar tenets while offering little to take their place. Weeks after the tragic attacks, a previously unimaginable 69 percent of students said they would support military action against the perpetrators. Terrorist hysteria quieted many who, before Sept. 11, would have rejected a pre-emptive war in Iraq that was based largely on exaggerated and unsubstantiated evidence. Party affiliation provided little guidance, as many who did not vote for Bush supported the invasion and others who gave Bush their votes came to question their decision...

...tragic face of the SARS epidemic in Taiwan doesn't belong to a patient or a politician, or even to a doctor or a nurse. Instead, the most vivid expression of this outbreak's impact can be found on an eight-year-old girl, Tang Chia-ru, who wears her hair in pigtails and, when given the choice, prefers noodles to rice. Last Friday, she stood behind her father fidgeting with her face mask and staring at the swarm of photographers who surrounded her and at the smiling face of her mother who looked down from a picture frame hanging...
