...nation in the world" for assistance. "We have hostiles in the woods," he cried. "We are being invaded!" But no one came to his aid, and his supporters were beginning to trickle away. Even the ambassador's wife had decided to leave the combination lean-to and trailer that was designated the "embassy compound." Thus, shortly after 4 p.m. on Saturday, with barely the pretense of extraterritoriality, Rick McLaren, self-declared "ambassador, consul-general and chief foreign legal officer" of the separatist Republic of Texas, ended his 6 1/2-day standoff against America, laid down 10 rifles and hundreds of rounds...

...DAVIS, Texas: Police shot and killed one of two heavily armed Republic of Texas fugitives after the man fired on police dogs and a helicopter tracking him. Authorities have not yet said whether the man was Richard Keyes or Mike Matson, who both fled the Republic of Texas embassy trailer Saturday rather than surrender to Texas Rangers. The other man apparently remains at large. Earlier in the day, the pair wounded two dogs in a brief salvo of close-range gunfire after police unleashed a pack of tracking hounds near a campsite less than a mile from the Republic...

FORT DAVIS, Texas: Police got their first break in a five-day standoff Friday when one Republic of Texas member emerged from their ramshackle trailer, raising hopes that a peaceful end may be near. Robert Scheidt, the group's "captain of the embassy guard," abruptly walked out on the others still holed up in the home of leader Richard McLaren. "I had to get out of there. I couldn't stand it anymore," Scheidt reportedly told a state trooper. Scheidt was released Monday from police custody, where he was being held on a weapons violation, and traded for the couple...

FORT DAVIS, Texas: Negotiations resumed with Republic of Texas secessionists when Texian leader Rick McLaren finally picked up the phone. Authorities had threatened to cut electricity to the trailer where the 13 separatists are holed up after a day and half of letting the phone ring. "So far the conversations have not been much more than chit-chat," said Mike Cox, spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, who said power to the trailer will not be switched off so long as the chit-chat continues. Outside support for the separatists appears to be dwindling. A Republic of Texas...

...rejecting any demand for surrender. The faction is "only interested in getting the foreign agents off of Texas soil," the statement read. An estimated 13 members of McLaren's group are believed to be entrenched throughout the 6,000-acre community. Even with law enforcement officials surrounding the trailer that he says serves as the "embassy" of the Republic, McLaren has managed to update a web site with news of his situation. On it, a red-lettered notice proclaims that the "embassy" has gone on "Red 1 Alert" because of presence of "forces currently arrayed against the Embassy." The site...
