This, at least, is the impression a viewer gets after seeing the trailers--the two-minute previews--for this summer's major-studio films. For months these promos have clogged theaters, an early goad to the moviegoers' want-see. When a trailer works, it can give its film the hint of blockbuster. The Independence Day spot has done that and more. Its shots of citizens staring up at an ominous spacecraft became famous so quickly that it inspired a rival promo: a spaceship lands and disgorges the Brady Bunch for A Very Brady Sequel...
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE (May 22). For all the bustle and flash in the trailer for this high-tech retake of the '60s series, the revelation that smites you is: Tom Cruise has a very large nose. This might not matter, since he also has a very large fan base; in the past decade his films have averaged $100 million U.S. gross. See that and raise you $50 million for this Mission...
...that the cement of a conspiracy case? Well, says Jones, Strassmeir also knows Dennis Mahon, late of the Ku Klux Klan, now a leader of the White Aryan Resistance. Mahon sometimes spent weekends at Elohim City in a trailer he kept there, and Strassmeir sometimes stayed at Mahon's home in Tulsa. But less than a hundred feet inside, the two lanes split around a giant rock wall. The lanes rejoin on the other side into a huge chamber for the factory. Other chambers that connect to the main one are being dug. The Pentagon's Joint Special Operations Command, which oversees Delta Force and seal Team-6, studied the Tarhunah layout and concluded that a commando raid...
Whitewater will never be a mini-series--too much trailer park, too few Gulfstreams jetting to private islands, amounts in the low-six rather than high-seven figures, and a low quotient of hunks. That may explain why Democrats, who last May joined a 96-3 vote authorizing the ethically challenged Senator Alfonse D'Amato to chair the Whitewater Committee, now are holding firm against an open extension of the hearings. After eight months there's no smoking gun, no smoking anything, just a simmering stew of subdivided Ozark property without sewer lines and endless minutiae about closing costs...
