...Mobile homes don't fare well, do they?" says Lykins, as they pass what appears to have been an abondoned trailer that has been wrecked and tossed on its side. Around the corner, Bond stops the big white Chevy 2500HD pickup again. A tree has crushed the roof of a good-sized bungalow, easily enough damage to have incapacitated anyone inside. "We got cars" in the driveway, he says. "We better do a check," says Lykins. The trio gets out to search, forcing their way in through the front door with a Haligan, a classic fireman's tool that resembles...

Congress has allocated enough money to purchase almost 300,000 trailers, 18,000 of which have already been delivered to victims of the storm. Still, few people in the industry think it can come up with anywhere near that many units in the next few months. Ed Unger, director of operations at Tom Raper RVs in Richmond, Ind., says it took about a week on e-mail to complete a $15 million to $20 million contract to provide from 1,000 to 2,000 trailers. Bush promised that the feds would rebuild the "great majority" of the "public infrastructure." But what of the houses that were lost that will not be covered by insurance? And there was no talk of rebuilding the Louisiana coastline, the best natural buffer against another...

Meeting Audrey, my quasi mother, was even stranger. Tilda Swinton had a Scottish accent in her trailer but spoke like a born American when the cameras were turned on. Her performance was so convincing that when the actors took time out for lunch, I found myself confiding in her about a romantic breakup I was suffering through. Writing autobiographical fiction, it's often said, is therapeutic for a novelist, but it's nothing compared with spilling one's guts to a live human being who is posing as one's parent...

Help can come in many forms. A few good souls have gone to craigslist.org to offer free space to refugees in their homes--from "a small 2 bdrm trailer" in West Virginia to "a double bed, plus a day bed" in the San Francisco Bay Area. A university in Orleans, France, offered to admit 50 displaced University of New Orleans students. The ambassador from Sri Lanka volunteered to raise money from the tsunami countries...
