...campaign trail and in the White House, Hughes earned a reputation for being tirelessly, and sometimes tiresomely, on message. Her refusal to acknowledge any flaw, mistake or internal dispute alienated reporters so much that at one point in the 2000 race Hughes offered to quit. "The press doesn't like me," she told Bush. "I don't play their game. That can't be good for your campaign." Bush turned her down, of course, out of loyalty and a conviction that message discipline trumps a sated press corps...

Most Catholic officials expect that the church's response to Kerry's candidacy will vary from diocese to diocese. You may not see many Catholic bishops appearing at Kerry photo ops this campaign season, and there's a possibility of some uncomfortable moments on the trail. "All you need is a picture of Kerry going up to the Communion rail and being denied, and you've got a story that'll last for weeks," says Father Thomas Reese, editor of the Jesuit magazine America...

...Vietnam movie. The ambiance is pitch-perfect; EA licensed original period antiwar hits like Fortunate Son so the tunes could blare ironically across the jungle. As in its predecessor, Battlefield 1942, players compete with strangers over the Internet on an intricate 3-D map (representing the Ho Chi Minh Trail, say, or the city of Hue). Your aim is to capture as many flags and annihilate as many opponents as possible. But in this game, jungle-shrouded snipers are among the features that heighten the anxiety level. The game's best moment comes when you launch a chopper attack...
