...Tran Van Hai, 34, has been hiding out in Saigon's labyrinthine alleyways since 1965. Reason: he is trying to avoid military service. While his wife works as a vendor, Hai does odd jobs in the neighborhood; together they make enough to care for their six children. When the police come, as they do with increasing frequency these days, he ducks down the maze of passages in his ramshackle neighborhood or hides between the wall panels of his house...

...province chief, Colonel Tran Van Nhut, has managed to set up a system of rice rationing. Bags of rice are handed across a wire fence to those who can come to get them. When a wizened man with a stump of a leg hobbles up, he cannot quite negotiate his crutch and his rice. He collapses in a heap, trying to figure out some way of fastening his ration to his loincloth...

As his battery of radios crackled in the background, Quoc reported that the situation around the town was quiet. It had better be. His retinue of lieutenants and enlisted men had been drinking Ba Muoi Ba brand beer and De Kuyper crème de menthe. An attack then would have been a disaster...

...Mekong Delta, where 80% of South Viet Nam's rice is grown, seven out of ten families were tenants, paying 30% or more of their income to the landlords for their land, seed and the use of a buffalo. Typical of the tenants was Tran Van Cau, 42, a farmer in the Delta village of Tan Loc. For ten years, Cau had tilled a small 4½-acre tract; he paid rent first to a local landlord, then for six years to the Viet Cong, then to the original landlord, who moved back after government troops "pacified" the village...
