...offered Rwanda military aid--1,000 troops--to help distribute the food and medical supplies already being delivered, according to the Rwandan Prime Minister. Faustin Twagiramungu said he'll respond tomorrow. The U.S. forces reportedly would use the Rwandan capital, Kigali, as a transit point instead of the jammed airport near refugee camps in the Zairian border town of Goma. The bottlenecked Goma has proved a frustrating place from which to launch a rescue effort, even though the largest contingent of refugees has gathered in and around the city. U.S. aircraft landed there today with vital equipment to purify contaminated...

...movie has two virtues essential to good pop thrillers. First, it plugs uncomplicatedly into lurking anxieties -- in this case the ones we brush aside when we daily surrender ourselves to mass transit in a world where the loonies are everywhere. Second, it is executed with panache and utter conviction. Possibly this is because Speed is the first feature for director Jan De Bont and writer Graham Yost, and they haven't yet learned all the bad things that can happen to good (and not so good) moviemakers in Hollywood. Supermarkets such as Safeway and Giant, fast-food restaurants such as Wendy's and Burger King, newspaper stands in Philadelphia's CoreStates Bank Plaza and even some taxis in Manhattan are now accepting credit cards. The New York City transit authority has joined the Washington Metro and the Bay Area Rapid Transit line in installing a fare-card system, which has contributed to a 40% drop in fare beating this year and could soon be used to introduce different price levels that reward frequent riders. Some states, among them Maryland...

This initial scene established both the tone and symbolism of the movie. Sophie, whom Irene hires, and who becomes the diva's personal maid as well as accompanist, is shown always in shadow, often in transit, and frequently on staircases. Indeed, her nondescript character becomes almost obtrusive in the film. Irene, by contrast, is invariably in the spotlight, observed not her elusive lover, Jacques (Samuel Labarthe). While Sophie is famished and shabbily dressed, a perpetual onlooker, Irene, the consummate actress, is adorned with smiles and the white dress she will wear in performance throughout the movie. Though the characters appears...
