Until the shutdown, the 201 buses of the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority served the city and seven municipalities. The buses were also the vehicle of desegregation for 1,300 of some 5,000 schoolchildren who take them every day. Last October the transit authority tried to close the yearly $1 million deficit by cutting back weekday service and eliminating Sunday service.
