...Kiekhaefer's compact 60-h.p. "in-board-outboard," the smallest unit on the market for 14-ft. to 18-ft. boats. Modified from a Renault automobile engine, the transom-mounted motor is as easy to install and operate as an outboard but leaves more room than an inboard, facilitates land transportation (because unlike straight inboards only the easily liftable outboard section hangs below the hull...

...designed. Other twelves have slightly crowned decks to add strength to the hull; Eagle's is pancake flat to give the crew better footing and to lower the center of gravity so the boat will stand up straighter in strong winds. Most modern twelves have a reverse-sloping transom-an ugly but useful device to save weight-but Luders achieves the same end by tapering deck and hull to a pointed stern...

...design of his boats, brainchild of famed Boston Naval Architect Ray Hunt. Most powerboats are sharply V'd at the bow, but the hull flattens out to provide a smooth "planing" surface near the stern. In the Bertrams, the "deep V" runs all the way aft to the transom, and the smooth sides of their hulls are broken with a series of jutting longitudinal strakes, like steps. ...Pennsylvania Academy awards, by contrast, are given to established artists invited by the Academy's jury to enter, and to "over the transom" entries from unknowns as well. The Temple Gold Medal, won this year by Stuart Davis and in earlier decades by such luminaries as Whistler, Eakins and Homer, carries no cash but a mintful of prestige. The aim of the show, according to Director Joseph Fraser, is to "give Philadelphia art lovers a chance to see a cross section of what's going on in the art world-a look at all the trends." Juries...

...motor; in the 1961 show, 13 boats with inboard-outboard motors were exhibited, 38 were shown last year, and this year's show has 44. Inboard-outboards have the motor inside the hull (conferring more horsepower and greater prestige), while the propeller assembly is mounted outside the stern transom, permitting it to be raised in shallow water or for beaching and trailering to and from the yachtsman's water supply...
