Among the variety of new Russian jet liners they saw on display at Le Bourget, U.S. experts were most impressed by the potential of the YAK-40, a 23-passenger, tri-jet transport designed by Aeronautical Engineer Sergei Yakovlev, 27, son of famed Soviet Aircraft Designer Alexsandr Sergeevich Yakovlev, for whom earlier YAK planes were named. What he had in mind, said Yakovlev, was a replacement for the famous old DC-3.
