...last week's collisions involved military planes. In clear skies 20 miles east of Kansas City, a civilian Piper Navajo flying under visual flight rules collided with an Army twin-engine transport, killing all five people involved. In the bright central Texas sky near Brownwood, two unarmed Air Force Phantom F-4 jets crashed while engaged in what the military called a "defensive-maneuver training mission." The crash left debris that stretched for five miles. Two men died, and two parachuted to safety. Finally, over Westerly, R.I., a Piper Cherokee and a Piper Archer, both single-engine, general-aviation aircraft...

Begin with a birth: a baby-faced soldier, Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen), is delivered from the womb of a transport plane into the harsh light of Viet Nam. He will find death soon enough: four patrols in the film, four wrenching revelations. On Chris' first night patrol he watches, paralyzed with fear, as the enemy approaches and another new boy dies. Attorney General Edwin Meese, meanwhile, faced questions about a request he made in late October to FBI Director William Webster for a ten-day delay in an investigation into the role played by Southern Air Transport in supplying the contras. Webster agreed. Meese had linked the request to "sensitive hostage negotiations." Some on Capitol Hill have charged that the content of Meese's request suggests that he had some idea of the connection between the Iran deals and the contras almost a month before he revealed it publicly. But Meese says he made his appeal at the behest of Poindexter...
