...inconsequential little place on the Hudson called West Point "for the practical and theoretical training of young men for the national military service, who, upon satisfactorily completing the four-year course are eligible for commissions as second lieutenants in the United States Army." The Vagabond, lovable drain-trap for unimportant details and evanescent emotions that he is, finds himself vastly impressed by this very ordinary second lieutenant coincidence just now. Napoleon and West Pointers--both young men starting life on the same footing--as second lieutenants...

...seminary in Wisconsin (TIME, Sept. 5). Professing to be unable to get past the restraining pickets, Father Simon remained in his rectory. Then, one day last week, a party of 60 Catholics, some local and some from nearby towns, drove up to St. Barbara's to spring the trap. They man-handled the pickets out of the way, broke open the rectory's locked door, took possession of it and the church. Father Simon emerged, coatless, collarless. Once outside, he made no move to leave for his appointed post in Wisconsin. Instead, he joined the pickets...

When Henry's faithful friend George Raft decided to immolate himself to atone...

Lately Dr. Anderson and his lean young coworker, Dr. Seth Neddermeyer, have been trying to trap barytrons near the end of their ranges-that is, as they slow up from exhaustion of energy after many collisions. The two physicists have a "cloud chamber" filled with argon, helium and alcohol vapor. A particle passing through knocks ions (electrified fragments) out of the gas atoms, and the vapor condenses on the ions, making a visible track which shows up as a white line in photographs. A device called a coincidence circuit snaps the picture when the particle passes through...

...discounting the effect of the magnetic field of the sun. On making this correction, the observed variation was practically nil. Hence, Dr. Compton now prefers to believe that the cosmic rays come from within, not without, the Milky Way-that they whiz around inside it like rats in a trap, prisoned there by the gigantic magnetic field of the galaxy, while electrically neutral starlight escapes to the outside...
