...April 22, with church bells pealing for the health of the planet. In tiny chapels and grand cathedrals, Sunday sermons will stress the moral responsibility of environmental awareness. And in thousands of communities around the world, citizens will stage a cacophony of events: parades, proclamations, protests, teach-ins, trash-ins and eco-fairs. In Seattle, residents will demonstrate against pollution in Puget Sound. Environmentalists in West Bengal, India, are planning a bicycle procession. Schoolchildren on Mauritius, a tiny island in the Indian Ocean, will plant trees. And a team of climbers from the U.S., the Soviet Union and China intends...
...easiest, most direct way for people to make a difference is to watch what they throw away. Every year more than 220 million trees are cut down just to make U.S. newspapers, the majority of which are tossed into the trash. Americans discard enough aluminum cans each year to rebuild the entire U.S. commercial airline fleet four times over. Quite obviously, says Earth Day 1990 chairman Denis Hayes, "the answer to the solid-waste problem is not figuring out some way to compact it or to incinerate it; the answer is to reduce...
While the contents of the trash can are easy to see, the all-but-invisible fumes that pour out of automobile tail pipes are just as damaging to the environment. Every time Americans climb behind the wheel, they make their own personal contribution to the global-warming threat. Here again, a gradual modification of life-style can make a dramatic difference. When possible, use mass transit and support its development and expansion. For short distances, consider using a bicycle; it is excellent aerobic exercise. And, as in the energy-short 1970s, buy more fuel-efficient autos and carpool to work...
...years has the United States had to defend itself from an annihilation as Israel has done three times? Does America have a mandatory three-year military draft and military reserves for all men from the age of 21 to 45? Does the United States have specially-made public trash cans designed to withstand a bomb explosion? When was the last time you saw a sign on a bus warning you about suspicious packages? Would America want Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt as neighbors instead of Canada and Mexico? Clearly, there are major differences in the immediate security needs of Israel...
...slight problem with Trust, George V. Higgins' 20th book, is that Earl's task is simple. He pulls off the theft easily; for fairly complicated reasons, the intended victim wants the car to disappear. Unfortunately, Earl ignores the instructions to have the hot auto crushed in a trash compactor. He sells it instead, a characteristic act of greed that promises to get him in trouble. But Higgins seems much more interested in atmosphere than in denouement. There are long, long passages of the author's by now patented low-life banter, characters being long-winded and tedious about the banalities...
