Netanyahu indefinitely closed Israel's borders to all Palestinians, putting some 100,000 day laborers out of work. He banned travel within the West Bank, cooping up Palestinians in their hometowns and handicapping normal commerce. For the first time, the Israeli government said it would stop paying out several million dollars it owes the Palestinian Authority in tax refunds. The Israelis also decided to jam broadcasts of the Palestinian Authority's official Voice of Palestine radio station, whose transmissions have recently been filled with anti-Israeli invective...

...money in investments that TIME estimates to be at least $6 billion strong. Even more unusual, most of this money is not in bonds or stock in other peoples' companies but is invested directly in church-owned, for-profit concerns, the largest of which are in agribusiness, media, insurance, travel and real estate. Deseret Management Corp., the company through which the church holds almost all its commercial assets, is one of the largest owners of farm- and ranchland in the country, including 49 for-profit parcels in addition to the Deseret Ranch. This turns cerebral Ellie into numinous jelly, but it is an alarming comedown from the director who played so entrancingly with time travel in the Back to the Future movies and gave us the delightful alternative reality of Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The success of Forrest Gump has made him Hollywood's philosopher-king, free to spend a fortune doing for the simple pieties what he recently did for simple-mindedness: make them look like...

MOSCOW: France has decided it cannot allow a French astronaut to travel to Mir until the fresh team of cosmonauts launching August 5 can repair the station. The new team will conduct an exterior space walk to pinpoint the location of a hole in Spektr's wall, pierced after a cargo ship collided with it in June, and will work to reattach cables disconnected after the June crash. U.S. astronaut Michael Foale will not participate in either operation, but instead has been instructed to camp inside the Soyuz escape capsule until a space shuttle mission picks him up in September...
