By the time he graduated, Roosevelt, now 38, had managed three Massachusetts political campaigns-including the unsuccessful bid of Lawrence R. DiCara '71 for state treasurer-and had earned a respected name in state Democratic circles.
Massachusetts State Treasurer Joseph D. Malone'78 attributes the political involvement of hisclass to the students' growing faith in governmentduring the late 1970's.
Last semester, all four of the council'selected posts were filled by minorities: Gabay,the president, and then-Secretary Cynthia D.Johnson '96 are Black, while then-Vice PresidentMelissa Garza '94 and then-Treasurer Rene Reyes'95 are Latino.
In fact, Black students hold exactly half thebody's elected executive posts--which includes theoffices of presidents, vice president, secretary,treasurer as well as the various chairs of thebody's committees. That number represents morethan twice the percentage of Blacks on thecouncil.
The two former students are reported to be the charity's former treasurer, David G. Sword '93, and co-chair, Charles K. Lee '93. Neither could be reached for comment last week, and both have refused to answer reporters' questions during the district attorney's probe.
