Despite the subtitle, only slightly more than half the book deals with the daily life of ABT, and this section is actually a more superficial treatment of behind-the-scenes life than Mazo's. Stevens' strength is the concise, graceful way he fleshes out the background of a professional dancer's world, the grounds of experience one doesn't see on a daily basis but which are no less a part of each performance than the rehearsals. Sillitoe contrasts his military prowess and civilian naivete through his sexual initiation with two sisters. His treatment of the two shop girls and their family is both comic and penetrating. Later, when retired colonel Scorton manages a bowling and billiards hall, Sillitoe again shows his feel for common people through his description of the clintele. On stage, Robeson the man essentially becomes James Earl Jones the actor: a prepossessing, engaging man, graciously humble about having led a life more inspiring than those of his audience. The playwrite, Philip Hayes Dean, defends this predictable, heart-warming treatment by pointing out that "if you take anybody's life and put it on stage, you have to make him charming; you're asking people to sit with him for two hours."
