...author succeeds in conveying a sense of loss without bathos. But his characters are familiar archetypes, and the family's newspaper gives off no scent of soul or sweat; too often the novel suggests the aroma of mothballs. The theme of A Family Trust demands a major treatment; it receives only a compelling outline. As a novelist, Ward Just is still promising rather than delivering...
...Eckhardt (D-Tex.), having just emerged from a meeting in which House members had discussed their reactions to and interpretations of the Senate "compromise," estimates that their bill would unjustifiably cost the consumer an additional $3.5 billion. Eckhardt attributed this "bonanza" for the gas industry to "more generous treatment in connection with drilling in closer proximity to existing wells," and to the fact that the Senate would allow new reservoirs found on old OCS leases to qualify for higher prices...
...bypasses have been performed so far, most of them in Switzerland, where the operation originated, and in the U.S., Canada and Germany. Unbesmirched by ambiguity, wiped of Weltshmerz, it comes to us like a babe, puerile and kicking. No meat for melodic meditation, no erudite arias, no recondite repartee a la intelligencia. In a word--a four-letter word...
...plot and the movie itself. His series of famed singers and actresses belting out "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend" will bring down any house, so carefully honed are his Channings and Ellas. Co-star Hollis McLaren is inevitably overshadowed by Russell's stagewise presence, but the delicate treatment she gives to her Crazy Liza perfectly complements her outlandish buddy...
