...Black Panthers offer a selection of twelve different greetings. One card portrays a pig-faced white Santa emerging from a chimney to confront a less-than-loving reception committee: a black father toting a carbine and his little boy preparing to bash St. Nick with a small Christmas tree. The trend is not only American. In Beirut the anti-Israel terrorists of Al-Fatah are selling cards with a drawing of innocent-looking Arab youths, one of them carrying a submachine gun. Al-Fatah hopes to collect more than $100,000 from its card sales, most of which will...
Mount Storm's air is being fouled by emissions from the smokestacks of two huge coal-burning power plants owned by Virginia Electric and Power Co. Since the plants were fired up in 1966, harvests of Mount Storm's tree farmers have tumbled by as much as 90%. Steyer had hoped to sell 20,000 trees this year. Instead, customers have been driving away in empty trucks, unwilling to take the stunted and mis-shapen trees. "I think I'm out of business," Steyer says sadly. Dr. Franklin Custer, the other principal tree grower near Mount Storm...
...hope for elm lovers. Funded with a $30,000 grant from Hansel's institute, Entomologist Dale Norris of the University of Wisconsin recently discovered a subtle chemical reaction that occurs when beetles attack elms. It is the quinol compounds in elm bark, he found, that make the tree delectable to beetles. Paradoxically, when the insects begin to munch, oxidation changes the tasty quinols into quinones that repel the beetles. By this time, unfortunately, the beetles have already infected the tree with deadly fungus. To ward off the beetles, Norris is now working to synthesize a quinone-like, nontoxic repellent...
...parallel attack on elm disease, the U.S. Department of Agriculture intends to cross the disease-prone American elm with the hardy Siberian variety. Even if the hybrid is a success, elm lovers are not likely to be pleased. The new tree clearly lacks the grace of its American parent. "It has a single, central trunk rather than our beautiful vaselike division," says Hansel. "Who will want a tree that looks more like a maple than...
