...then, will be this Christ that's coming? Whose Christ is this coming? Will he be just and chaste? Will he be Judas? Will Christ kiss Christ? Will Christ swing his bag of silver, swing his body from the tree? Will Christ be anointed by whores, be lover of liars, lover of women, a Christ dragged and dirtied? Will he be Christ with faith flagging, flogged, wielding wildly thorns? Will he be Christ rising from rudeness and doubt to take the cross like a shining scepter? ...Harry Potter [BOOKS, Sept. 20]. As an author, I have despaired of the future of both writing and reading, given the plummeting literary standards and increasing indifference to learning in our era. In so dark an hour, it is nothing short of magical that what J.R.R. Tolkien called the "Tree of Tales" could put forth a green and growing shoot like the Harry books--a branch that can serve as a broomstick to bear us "lands away" and, better still, worlds within. In a happily self-deprecating running joke, we invented an imaginary sitcom based on our less-than-TV-star lives, and they began emailing us mock scripts, guest-starring our impenetrably perky...

...Radcliffe stalwarts converged outside Fay House to mark the historic change. Beneath the small apple tree that guards Radcliffe Yard--a traditional symbol of the college--a group of Radcliffe officials gathered at 12:01 a.m. to toast the end of the 120-year-old institution's independence from Harvard and the birth of the Institute...
