...Sheeni, it turns out, is tentatively open to relieving Nick of his virginity. She does have a boyfriend - an athlete, poet and French speaker named Trent - but she's game for any new admirers. There's a captivating smugness to Doubleday; when she flirts, you see traces of Sue Lyon's Lolita. She and Nick court in a flurry of name-dropping, a romantic version of Amazon's "If you liked this, you'll love this" routine. For her, it's anything French, from Godard's Breathless to Serge Gainsbourg, and though Nick favors Frank Sinatra, he adapts. When Sheeni...

...Certainly, Congress is as polarized now as it has ever been. With the retirements last year of longtime Republicans John Warner of Virginia, Chuck Hagel of Nebraska and Mississippi's Trent Lott, there's hardly a Republican left who is willing to reach out across the aisle. The punishment for such comity is tea-party declarations of being a traitor: witness Lindsey Graham's second censure this week by a South Carolina County Republican Party for his bipartisan work on climate change. On the Democratic side, the death of Massachusetts' Ted Kennedy, the retirement of John Breaux of Louisiana...

"I know for a fact that the toughest job in this city is majority leader," says Lott, who knows firsthand the threat of ambitious underlings. After he made indelicate remarks praising Strom Thurmond's segregationist bid for the White House, they were quick to force him out as majority leader. "There's always pressure on you from within your own party and across the aisle. So he's juggling a lot of balls, he's got a very tough job, and it doesn't help...

...Couples Retreat was co-written by Vaughn and Favreau, with an assist from Dana Fox, and it has the choppiness you'd expect from too many cooks in the kitchen (in contrast, Favreau was the only screenwriter on Swingers). I'm fine with the original Trent ("money") and Mike (not "money," no matter what Trent said) moving to the suburbs, having kids, getting fat and spending weekends at Home Depot and Applebee's. These things happen. What's depressing is that there's hardly a creative spark in this sour, offensive, contrived story, and its sloppiness is more consistent than...

...album’s lead single and most representative song. “Die Slow” has all the elements of HEALTH’s style: a mix of elaborate, heavy synths with drums and guitar, buried androgynous vocals and an industrial feel that is reminiscent of Trent Reznor. The industrial influence ads color musically, but it fails to provide thematic depth. The album is steeped in monotonously dark imagery; take for further evidence the songs entitled “Severin” and “Eat Flesh.” What the record needs is a little...
