...this is yet another review of an eagerly anticipated smartphone. And yes, the Motorola Q is fairly similar to high-powered consumer phones in other parts of the world. (It looks like a Palm Treo that's been flattened with a rolling pin.) But the Q brings the first-ever pairing of Microsoft's Smartphone operating system - which comes with Outlook and Pocket MSN, including Hotmail and messaging, built in - with a QWERTY keyboard that makes text messaging a lot easier...
...Although this is not a business phone - the Q lets you view Microsoft Office documents but not edit them and, unlike the new Treo 700p, can't be used as a wireless modem - it's not exactly an entertainment phone either. Verizon has yet to work out a pricing plan that allows the Q to work with its V Cast streaming videos and high-quality music downloads. Stuck in the middle, the Q is for sale at the $200 mark (provided you renew your contract, etc.), just above most V Cast phones and just below Verizon's duo of Treos...
...mere six hours after closing the bar, Batali could be found swimming in the Peninsula's rooftop pool. After he swam, Batali put away crab cake Benedict while constantly checking his Treo for messages and simultaneously answering my questions. Then he was off for two hours of negotiations with retailers to persuade them to place orders for his cookware. Next he did the demo, and afterward he signed autographs for about 250 fans. He also kept up a running banter that had continued all weekend...
...Though it's hard to give up an iPod, I am impressed that the Treo supports Windows Media 10 "portable subscription" audio and video. I loaded Neil Diamond's new album that I got from Yahoo! Unlimited, where I have a yearly subscription ($60/year). Though I never purchased the album directly, I am free to carry it with me. Better still, this is one of the only Verizon Wireless phones that lets you set your own music as a ring tone, and I could select not just MP3s and WMAs, but also protected Yahoo! content...
...songs that I noticed a funny interface design flaw: Every so often, instead of an X in the upper right hand corner, you see an "OK" which is essentially the same thing: click it and you close your window. There's even an "OK" button on the Treo, which closes whatever you're in, whether or not there's an "OK" to be clicked. This is the problem. As I was choosing songs to use as ringtones, I kept hitting "OK" and nothing happened. After several tries, I noticed that there was a "Select" option at the bottom...
