...sneaking into the United States from Mexico in 2005, the U.S. could have extradited him to Venezuela to face charges in the 1976 bombing of a Cuban jetliner that killed all 73 persons aboard. He denies involvement, but declassified FBI documents implicate him in the crime. (A questionable military trial in Venezuela had acquitted Posada of the bombing charge and he was in jail awaiting a civilian retrial when he escaped from that country in 1985.) This time, federal prosecutors opted to try him on charges of lying about how he got into the U.S. Even so, Posada was released...
...Pursuit of Justice How come Samantha Power [Aug. 4] doesn't see that as long as the International Criminal Court indicts and brings to trial Karadzic and the like, but not the other leaders responsible for no less criminal acts, then she shouldn't be surprised if that sort of criticism of the ICC continues as before. That being the case, to talk about justice is tantamount to accepting - with a loud "Vae victis" - the iniquities carried out by those who seem convinced that their aggressiveness is - and continues to be - simply above the law. Evidence-based research means, more or less, that someone has done statistical analyses on subjectively chosen "outcome parameters." There are some cases where the outcome, or endpoint, of a trial is pretty definitive and measurable - like, say, death. Other times, the outcome parameters can be as nebulous as "satisfaction" or "discomfort" - but in these cases, when numbers are assigned to subjective experience (e.g., "my discomfort level is now three out of 10") and plugged into an algebraic formula, they produce "rational" or "evidence-based" conclusions, which suddenly have the ring of scientific truth. As far as the evidence-based movement...
...After deliberating, the Surrey magistrates decided that McKinney and May should stand trial on kidnap charges but granted McKinney bail. Outside the court she declared her innocence, regaled the press with the promise that they'd heard nothing yet and walked off, tossing over her shoulder, "You can have my life story for twenty-five thousand!" But in April 1978, a month before her trial was due to begin, McKinney and May fled the country...
...trial by fire, in some respects, but at least the U.S. women have a taste of what the pressure cooker team finals will be like later in the week, when only three gymnasts will be competing on each apparatus and all three scores count. With the home crowd rooting for their team in a sure to be sold-out National Indoor Stadium, the stakes - and the stress - will be even higher come Wednesday. "We've definitely done better, but we've also seen worse," says Sacramone. "We will ice up, rest tonight and hit the gym tomorrow. We want that...
